Fish maw is made from the dried swim bladder of fish and is regarded as one of the Eight Treasures of Chinese dried seafood. It is the “maw” referred to in the famous delicacy grouping of “abalone, sea cucumber, shark fin, and fish maw.” Rich in collagen, various vitamins, and trace elements such as calcium, zinc, iron, and selenium, fish maw is often referred to as the “Ginseng of the Sea.”

Since the Han Dynasty, fish maw has been served as a prized delicacy and nourishing food in Chinese culture. According to the ancient Chinese medical text Compendium of Materia Medica (Bencao Gangmu), “Fish maw is sweet in flavour and neutral in nature.
